Online video games are popular with children and adults alike, and they provide an incredibly fun way for them to interact with each other as well as competing with one another. The Internet has provided an entirely new way to play video games, and millions of people all over the world log on to their personal computers at least weekly to take part in this exciting activity. Many people who did not even have a PC at birth now have one, and they routinely play online video games as a form of relaxation, recreation, and education. There are millions of people playing online games, and you too can benefit from playing these games. It just takes a few minutes of your time every day to get the benefits of online video games.

First, let’s talk about how online games work. An online video game is a game that is largely or partially played via the Internet or some other computer network around the world. In our current study, we used data from a survey of over 500 college students to explain the way that online video games work. We found that:

Computer mediation. Players interact through chat programs or visual networks using computers, laptops, mobile devices, netbooks, and other similar platforms. Our Google scholar research explained that this is what gives these online games their “social” aspect. When two players who are logged into the same game room communicate with one another, it becomes a form of “computer-mediated communication.” They can share perspectives, experiences, ideas, jokes, and thoughts – anything that would normally be accomplished within “real-world” social circles. Computer mediated socialization. The research also explained that online games create and reinforce socially desirable interpersonal relationships. In our google scholar study, we found that participants in online games were more likely to help one another out if they were also friends. This is because the mechanics of the game – being connected – creates the perfect opportunity for them to cooperate with one another.

Cyberpsychology. Our second study of this topic was focused on internet use and its relation to cyberpsychology. This is a relatively new field that studies how people use the internet and its many features, such as chat rooms, instant messaging, and photo albums. Our analysis showed that those who had more internet use were more likely to exhibit characteristics of cyberpsychology and social networking. We found that those who used the internet for “cybernetic” purposes, such as building electronic clubs, message boards, discussion forums, and chatting online, were more likely to display characteristic behaviors associated with this “web based” field.

Our third research subject was the impact of computer mediated communication on academic performance. We found that those who spent more time in a “cybernetic” environment were also better students. The results of this study were not surprising, but we did want to provide a link between cyberpsychology and internet use. For example, those who played video games were more likely to have good grades, which may help explain the popularity of video games in schools and colleges across the country.
